All Cannings had a Sunday school by 1808 and a day-school by 1818.[1] 100 pupils were enrolled in the day-school but attendance was much less as many of the children worked in the fields during the week.[1]
By 1833 the village had two day-schools: the parish school with 105 pupils and a private school with 12 pupils.[1] The Rector, Rev Thomas Anthony Methuen, had the parish school built that year on land given by the Lord of the Manor, Alexander Baring.[1] The private school had closed by 1858.[1] The parish school received a further grant of land in 1862, bringing it up to the last land extension on the School site.
From 1863 it was required that all schools in the National School system kept a log-book, initially to be filled in each day although later this became weekly or as required. Today the log is over 2,000 pages long. An admissions register was also required to be completed after 1874.
In 1990 it emerged that plans for a new school were being drawn up, but it was not until July 1997 under the Schools Renewal Programme that funding was secured under headteacher Mrs Julia Roberts. Later that year new land adjacent to the village's cemetery was acquired as a site for the new school. In 1999 the new school building was opened in a ceremony attended by The Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Sir Maurice Johnston, the parish vicar, Rev. Alan Jeans and many alumni.
Today the school has more than 110 pupils in four classes. The school's Board of Governors has 16 governors and a Clerk to the Governors. The school recently completed an extension to its staff room and the creation of a library. All Cannings Primary School has won many awards, most recently every sporting award in the Devizes area and The Green Flag Award.[2] The school also has a pre-school.
In June 2009 All Cannings Primary School was awarded 'Grade 1 - Outstanding' in all areas of the school, except raising standards through higher goals, for which it received 'Grade 2 - Good'.[3]
